Student LEadership Opportunities

The development of leadership skills within our students is one of the primary goals of the Centennial HS Choral Department. In cooperation with the choral staff, our student leaders play an important role in the success of the our ensembles. We take these positions very seriously and therefore want only the best students in positions of leadership. Students in these roles are expected to serve as examples for all of our students through not only their words and actions, but also their rehearsal etiquette, general attitude, and overall involvement in the program. Chief among their responsibilities is the regular demonstration and support of the core values of our department:
  • Responsibility through punctuality, following through with commitments, bringing supplies to rehearsal, communicating with the staff, delivering information to parents, and making a marked effort to improve musical skills and learn repertoire.
  • Professionalism by displaying self-discipline, working well with others, having an attitude of respect of the director and other school staff, presenting a positive image for the organization, and displaying the qualities of a professional musician.
  • Dignity by adhering to the campus dress code, using appropriate language and etiquette, displaying self-motivation in rehearsal, and presenting oneself in a well groomed manner.
  • Integrity through honesty with the director, oneself, and other students, regular attendance at school and out of school rehearsals and events.
  • Compassion through sensitivity and acceptance of diversity, displaying kindness and encouragement to peers, and showing sympathy for others.​

Social Leadership Team
The following positions are open to students and filled each year by application and interview with the program director. Basic duties and the descriptions of each position for on this team are can be found below:
  1. President: The choir president serves as coordinator of student officers and public liaison for the choir department and is responsible for scheduling and planning regular officer meetings, coordinating choir officer functions and assisting the choir directors as needed. 
  2. Vice-President: The choir vice-president to assist in all of the activities of the department. The choir vice-president will share the jobs of coordinating the regular social events, and assisting the choir president in all activities. ​
  • Secretary: The secretary should take notes at each officer meeting and then submit them via email to the officers and the director. The secretary will be responsible for attendance check-in at events and for keeping the calendar in the choir room updated. 
  • Public Relations Officer(s): The public relations offer is responsible for communicating with students, the school, and the community concerning choir events through approved social media outlets, school news, and other forums as requested by the Director and the Choir Council. Student must possess the ability to access these platforms and demonstrate a reasonable command of the English language and exercise good judgement when managing these outlets. 
Musical Leadership Team
The following positions are open to students and filled each year by application and interview with the program director. A musical audition, skills assessment may be required. Basic duties and the descriptions of each position for on this team are can be found below:
  1. Student Director: This student will assist the director in preparation of their choir for performance. To qualify for this position, the student director must be at least a junior member of Chorale and complete an interview/audition with Mr. Cooley. This student should have strong musical skills and be comfortable leading the ensemble. Piano skills (enough to help teach parts) are very helpful in this position. 
  2. Section Leaders: Section leaders are used in the varsity ensembles as an important tool in the instruction and learning of music. Section leaders need to be excellent musicians but also have the leadership skills to teach small groups of students. Piano skills (enough to help teach parts) are very helpful in this position. 
Student Support Team
The following positions are open to students and filled each year by application and interview with the program director. Basic duties and the descriptions of each position for on this team are can be found below:

  1. Choral Manager(s): Students selected to serve in this capacity will assist the director in maintaining the musical inventory, uniform  of the choir department. This position requires time outside of the school day to assist with music management, check-in/check-out. Students will be responsible for helping the directors/officers with program activities as needed and support the Booster Club Uniform Officer in tracking uniforms and helping students prepare for events. 
  2. Logistics Manager(s): Students selected to serve in this capacity are responsible for helping prepare our school and performances spaces for events. These students will not only manage these events, but also recruit a team and in coordination with the choir director ensure all logistic needs for events have been met. They will work with the Booster Club Uniform Officer to help track uniforms and assist students with uniform needs and other events throughout the school year. ​​
