Choir Announcements & Program Updates
Greetings Choir Students and Family Members,
This week is a busy one for the students in the CHS Choral Department. This week marks the arrival of both UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest and our trip to New Orleans. While we are extremely busy, this is an exciting time as students throughout our program get the opportunity to share their musical gifts and talents with the surrounding communities and travel abroad to experience the musical and historical scene of other cities. Continue reading below for some exciting news about several new opportunities available to all choir members.
On April 12th and 13th, over 90 choir members from Centennial High School will travel to compete at Southwest High School as part of the UIL Region VII Choral Concert and Sight-Reading Competition. This year our campus will be represented by four choral ensembles (three varsity choirs and two junior varsity choir); A record number of ensembles and student participants for our school since its opening in 2010. Students have been preparing diligently for this performance event and are poised to represent our school, our community, and themselves with pride and dignity.
Thank you for supporting their efforts and outside of school commitments as we work to prepare for this event. Their preparations have led to some truly wonderful musical experiences and tremendous personal growth that we are eager to share with our fellow musicians and surrounding community. Please take a moment to review the attached document for information regarding your student’s role and responsibilities during this event.
Applications for All-State Choir Camp and Senior Scholarships are now available to students to all students for completion and submission. This year the booster club is pleased of expand possible senior scholarship awards to (4) $500 scholarships and will awards up to (6) $100 All-State Choir Camp scholarships. This is the second year of offering All-State scholarships. These grants are intended to encourage all students to engage in the all-state process as a means for sharpening their musical skills and enriching their musical experience. Applications for the all-state scholarships can be completed online at www.centennialhschoir.com. The application for Senior Scholarships has been attached to this email. All applications are due to Mr. Cooley no later than Friday, May 6th. Awards will be announced on the Spring Concert, Friday, May 20th.
CHS Choir Goes to the Opera
Join us for a one-of-a-kind learning opportunity at FWOpera's Student Night at the Opera. Through a grant from the FWO students will have the unique experience the exceptional classical music and delightful theatrics that accompany the story of the lowly barber and his pursuit of the beautiful Rosina.
The Barber of Seville - Thursday, April 28 at 5:00-10:00 p.m. at Bass Hall (Tickets - $5 each)
Desperately in love, Count Almaviva is desperate to win the affections of the beautiful and charming Rosina. Standing in the way of their happiness is Rosina’s guardian and all-around curmudgeon Dr. Bartolo and the meddling music teacher Basilio. Guiding the antics and action of the story is 2014 McCammon Voice Competition winner Joo Wan Kang as Almaviva’s trusted confidant and barber, Figaro.
Students will take a bus from Centennial High School to Bass Hall and return in a similar manner. Tickets are $5 and are available on a first-come, first served basis. Only prepayment will reserve student spots. Information about dinner on the evening of this performance trip will be included in a forth coming email. All Monies are due by Tuesday, April 26th.
Eligibility and Grades
This week marks the final week of the grading period. Students in all choirs should be working to ensure that all assignments and projects are turned in time a timely manner to ensure they are able to achieve maximum credit for their efforts. For those students in our varsity ensembles, this eligibility report (the grades posted on Monday at 8:00AM) will determine their ability to participate in the DBU Festival Di Voce (April 26th) and State Solo & Ensemble Contest. Please make sure that you are checking all of your assignment due dates and attending tutorial sessions as needed to pass/achieve the best possible marks in all classes. Students traveling to New Orleans should ensure that all work is completed/submitted prior to departure.
